Glass Lined Steel (GLS), also known as Glass-Fused-to-Steel (GFS), is a composite material where the strength and flexibility of steel are combined with the corrosion resistance and chemical inertness of glass. The manufacturing process involves applying a specifically formulated borosilicate glass frit to a steel substrate and then firing it at high temperatures ( 800-900°C ). This high-temperature firing causes the glass to fuse with the steel, creating a chemical bond at the molecular level. This fusion process results in a highly durable, non-porous, and abrasion-resistant surface. The key to GLS's performance lies in the chemical bonding between the glass and steel, which prevents undercutting and delamination – common failure mechanisms in other coating systems.

Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) is a thermosetting powder coating applied to steel substrates to provide corrosion protection. The process involves electrostatically spraying dry epoxy powder onto a preheated steel surface (typically around 200-250°C). Upon contact with the hot steel, the powder melts and flows, forming a uniform and continuous film. The subsequent curing process creates a cross-linked polymer network, resulting in a tough and durable coating that offers excellent adhesion, impact resistance, and chemical resistance. FBE is particularly effective in preventing corrosion in buried or submerged pipelines and other demanding applications.

GLASS LINED STEEL - ENAMEL

The Perfect Fusion of Strength and Protection.

The GLS enamel is a critical component. It's not just any glass; it's a specially formulated borosilicate glass frit designed to have a coefficient of thermal expansion similar to that of the steel substrate.

This similarity minimizes stress at the glass-steel interface during temperature fluctuations, preventing cracking and spalling.

The enamel is also formulated to resist attack from a wide range of chemicals, including acids (except hydrofluoric acid), alkalis, and solvents. Different enamel formulations are available for specific applications, such as high-temperature service or exposure to particularly aggressive chemicals. The quality of the enamel is determined by factors such as its chemical composition, particle size distribution, and fusion characteristics.
